The Dayton History Fund

Funds donated to the Dayton History Fund help preserve and interpret more than 40 buildings and millions of artifacts and provide year-round educational programming.

These funds are used for a variety of purposes, such as:

  • Collecting and preserving the artifacts and stories connected to our region’s history.
  • Conserving and maintaining the 1905 Wright Flyer III—the only airplane designated a National Historic Landmark, the world’s first practical flying machine, and what the Wright brothers considered their most important aircraft.
  • Providing students with high-quality educational experiences.
  • Operating and maintaining Deed’s Carillon—Ohio’s largest carillon.
  • Assisting with the costs of operating and maintaining the Deed’s Carillon, Ohio’s largest carillon
  • Providing exciting summer learning opportunities for children.
  • Maintaining Carillon Historical Park’s scenic and beautiful grounds.

Did you know that…

Just $5.00 enables a child to participate in one of our school field trips.
Donations of any size are valued.

$25 Buys five pounds of wool for spinning demonstrations on a historic loom
$50 Buys enough beeswax for three classes of schoolchildren to learn candle making
$100 Buys 6 gallons of oil to keep the lights burning in Locust Grove Schoolhouse or historically accurate garden tools for the William Morris House garden
$250 A full cord of firewood for educational programming at the William Morris House or a professionally made, historically accurate costume for our historical interpreters to wear to help bring history to life
$500 Audio visual equipment maintenance for the Object Theatre in the Wright Brothers Aviation Center and other exhibits or cookware and stoneware pieces for the hearth cooking workshops

Larger gifts are always welcome.  They can provide a way to make future projects our reality.

Heritage Center of Dayton Manufacturing & Entrepreneurship

Heritage Center of Dayton Manufacturing & Entrepreneurship

By the turn of the century, Dayton had more patents, per capita, than any U.S. city, and one-sixth of the nation’s corporate executives had spent a portion of their career at legendary Dayton company National Cash Register (NCR). Beginning in the mid-1800s, Dayton established itself as a center of manufacturing and entrepreneurship. Companies such as NCR, the Barney & Smith Car Company, McCall’s Publishing, DELCO, the Wright Company, and the Huffy Corporation set Dayton apart in innovation and forward thinking.

Carillon Historical Park’s Heritage Center of Dayton Manufacturing & Entrepreneurship is themed around innovation, manufacturing, industry, engineering, and invention. And the focus of the Heritage Center rests on five main individuals: John H. Patterson, Orville & Wilbur Wright, Charles F. Kettering, and Colonel Edward A. Deeds.

As a city set in the middle of the country, Dayton continues to remind us of America’s Gilded Age and the entrepreneurial spirit of this nation. The Heritage Center covers a span of over 150 years, starting as early as 1840 and continuing into the nuclear age. It paints a picture of a city emerging out of the industrial revolution and evolving into a major center of manufacturing. Evolving over time, Dayton was a center of innovation through the Civil War, Reconstruction Era, Gilded Age, Progressive Era, World War I, roaring 1920s, Great Depression, World War II, and Cold War era.

Hawthorn Hill

Hawthorn Hill is Orville Wright’s success mansion. Join the ranks of Charles Lindbergh, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison as visitors to the world’s first pilot’s last home.

With its white pillars and twin porches, Hawthorn Hill has long been synonymous with Orville Wright and the Wright family. After purchasing property at the corner of Salem Avenue and Harvard Boulevard in Dayton, the Wright brothers’ younger sister, Katharine Wright, soon cajoled her world famous brothers to move construction to Oakwood’s rolling, idyllic hills. Although both Orville and Wilbur were involved in planning the home, Wilbur died of typhoid fever on May 30, 1912, at age 45.

Upon completion in 1914, Hawthorn Hill became the residence of Orville, Katharine, and their elderly father, Bishop Milton Wright. Over the next 34 years, the mansion welcomed Charles Lindbergh, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and other luminaries.

When Orville died on January 30, 1948, Hawthorn Hill was purchased by National Cash Register (NCR) for use as a corporate guest house. For 58 years, the historic home was wonderfully preserved, but only open intermittently. Many regional residents long wondered what sat inside Orville’s mysterious mansion high upon an Oakwood hilltop.

But in August 2006, at the suggestion of Congressman Mike Turner, NCR gifted Hawthorn Hill to the Wright Family Foundation. Managed by the Wright brothers’ great-grandniece, Amanda Wright Lane, and great-grandnephew, Stephen Wright, the Wright Family Foundation asked Dayton History to manage and interpret the home.

In March 2009, Hawthorn Hill became part of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. In June 2013, ownership was officially transferred to Dayton History. It is now open to the public, and though NCR remodeled the Colonial Revival home, they meticulously photographed Orville’s original décor. Dayton History is busy bringing the property back to its original appearance.
